The University of New England agreed to compete in a home-and-home football series with the Coast Guard Academy for the 2018 and 2019 seasons, including the first game for the Nor’easters.

UNE’s first varsity game will be Aug. 30, 2018, against Coast Guard at New London, Connecticut. The teams will meet the following season in Biddeford on Sept. 7, 2019.

UNE plans to play sub-varsity games in 2017 before starting its varsity program in 2018.

WINSTON-SALEM OPEN: Second-seeded Kevin Anderson beat the 2014 finalist, Jerzy Janowicz, 7-6 (2), 6-4 to advance to the quarterfinals in North Carolina.

TRACK AND FIELD

MEMOIR SET: Suzy Favor Hamilton, a former Olympian and University of Wisconsin track star, said she plans to publish a memoir next month that will touch on mental health issues that she said drove her to become a call girl.

Favor Hamilton told her Twitter followers that the book, entitled “Fast Girl,” will go on sale Sept. 14. She tweeted that she can’t wait to share her story.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Wayne Rooney ended a 10-game scoring drought by scoring three times as Manchester United, after a year’s absence, returned to the group stage with a 4-0 victory at Bruges, Belgium, closing out a 7-1 victory on aggregate.

Others teams to qualify for Thursday’s group-stage draw were FC Astana of Kazahkstan, Bayer Leverkusen of Germany, CSKA Moscow and BATE Borisov of Belarus.

AUTO RACING

INDYCAR PENALTIES: Tristan Vautier lost three points, was fined $10,000 and will miss the first two hours of practice Friday at Sonoma , California — penalties for taking himself and championship contender Graham Rahal out of the race Sunday at Pocono.

IndyCar officials said Vautier could have avoided contact with Rahal, who is second in the standings.

NHL: Ron “Chico” Maki, a member of the Chicago Blackhawks 1961 Stanley Cup champions, died at his home in Port Dover, Ontario.

OLYMPICS

2024 GAMES: Los Angeles’ 2024 Olympics plan stalled before the City Council amid questions about potential runaway costs and the impact on neighborhoods already strangled by traffic.

The council had been expected to vote on a proposal to give Mayor Eric Garcetti broad authority to execute agreements linked to the bid, but the vote was pushed backed until at least Friday after it became clear members were struggling with questions. “What protections do we have? Is this going to be a blank check?” Councilman David Ryu asked.

CYCLING

SPANISH VUELTA: Caleb Ewan of Australia charged to the front in the final 100 meters to win the fifth stage, and Tom Dumoulin did enough to pass Esteban Chaves of Colombia for the overall lead.

Dumoulin gained the leader’s red jersey by finishing just five spots ahead of Chaves as the peloton crossed the line, enough for a one-second lead overall.
