I’ve made Maine my home since last November. After my first Arctic winter, it was time to get out of the house and look for a job.

On a cold March Friday, I ventured to Portland for First Friday and started on the long gallery path. I was truly overwhelmed by the energy, talent and creativity of the local community.

My last stop that evening was the Roux & Cyr International Art Gallery. The minute I met Susan Roux, I felt her radiating energy and her passion for art. We chatted for a little bit, but as it became late, I had to say goodbye, though I knew I’d be back.

When I next stopped in, I shared my employment situation with Susan, and, after thinking for a few minutes, she invited me to join one of her painting classes as she believed “it would nourish my soul.”

I had never painted in my life and felt that a painting class would be a luxury for someone looking for a job. Little did I know that this experience would transform my life.

The class became my weekly “creative anchor” that allowed me to discover how to see and peel apart the layers of color, depth and texture in a picture, how to work on a composition, how to mix colors into an infinite palette of hues and so much more.

In six weeks, I finished my first painting and discovered that talent is about believing in ourselves, being patient, opening our senses, letting go of our preconceived ideas, sharing our experiences and embracing the gift of learning. I was able to apply these skills to my job search and am now enjoying a new career opportunity.

Thank you, Susan, for allowing me to learn about myself and nourishing way more than my soul, but the infinite possibilities we are given.
