GORHAM — C.C. Pelletier and Emma Dennison scored in the final 11 minutes to give the University of Southern Maine a 2-0 win over SUNY-Maritime in its women’s soccer season opener Saturday.

Pelletier broke the scoreless deadlock in the 80th minute. SUNY-Maritime keeper Cammie Havens stopped Pelletier’s point-blank shot, but Pelletier got to the rebound and slotted the ball into the net.

Dennison added an insurance goal off a corner kick in the 88th minute.

Maritime (1-1) was awarded a free kick from about 25 yards in the 83rd minute, but Gayle Woods’ shot was cleanly handled by Southern Maine keeper Marissa Temple, who earned her fourth career shutout by making two saves.

ST. JOSEPH’S 2, NEWBURY 1: Whitney White scored 3:15 into the second overtime to lift the Monks (1-1) over the Nighthawks (0-2) in the Husson Classic at Bangor.

Newbury opened the scoring in the 37th minute. The Monks tied the game on a goal by Desiree Parent with 23:30 left in regulation.

SOUTHERN MAINE C.C. 8, VERMONT TECH 0: Hannah Fields scored a pair of goals, and Lourdes Palacious, Zyrah Giustra and Sarah Clough each added a goal and an assist for the Seawolves (1-1) against the Knights (0-3) at Randolph Center, Vermont.

Samantha Cleaves, Tori Cormier and Kym Hendrix also scored.

FOOTBALL

ALFRED 39, HUSSON 25: Maleke Fuentes scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 7-yard run late in the third quarter, and the Saxon (1-0) rallied for a win over the Eagles (0-1) at Bangor.

Deon Wiggins had four receptions for a career-high 134 yards and two touchdowns for Husson, but two fumbles in the second half proved costly for the Eagles.

Wiggins’ second touchdown, on a 31-yard pass from Joe Seccareccia with 6:06 left in the third quarter, gave Husson a 25-24 lead.

Seccareccia completed 20 of 38 passes for 258 yards and three touchdowns. John Smith rushed for 81 yards on 24 carries for the Eagles.

SUNY-MARITIME 30, MAINE MARITIME 0: Zach Chilcott passed for 137 yards, including a 42-yard touchdown, and Brett McKinney had 111 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries to lead the Privateers (1-0) past the Mariners (0-1) in New York City.

Maine Maritime’s Michael Fahey rushed for 54 yards and caught three passes for 84 yards.

MEN’S SOCCER

BRIDGEWATER STATE 3, SOUTHERN MAINE 1: Andrew Chenard scored a pair of goals as Bridgewater State (2-1) defeated the Huskies (1-1-1) in Gorham.

Jonathan Pires’ header off a direct kick gave the Bears a 1-0 lead at the half. Chenard added two goals in the first 10:51 of the second half to make it 3-0 before USM’s Kyle Curley drilled home a penalty kick midway through the half.

Simon Hulbert made 11 saves for USM.

SOUTHERN MAINE C.C. 1, VERMONT TECH 1: Steve Rwendeye scored on an assist from Brandon Ford in the 37th minute to give Southern Maine Community College (0-1-2) a 1-0 lead, but the Seawolves settled for a draw against the Knights (0-1-2) at Randolph Center, Vermont.

Troy Girard scored the equalizer with 17:13 left in regulation.

Drew Martin finished with 10 saves for SMCC.

FIELD HOCKEY

UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 3, KEENE STATE 1: Alyssa Kowal, Nicole Matarozzo and Haley Pelletier scored to lead the Nor’easters (2-0) past the Owls (1-1) at Biddeford.

Matarozzo also had an assist. UNE goalie Holly Smith finished with eight saves.

SPRINGFIELD 3, SOUTHERN MAINE 0: Maggie Kennedy scored twice and Katie Gill assisted on all three goals as the Pride (1-0) beat the Huskies (1-1) in Springfield, Massachusetts.

USM goalie Amanda Kasbohm had five saves.
