CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — Starting tailback Nigel Beckford was suspended for Maine’s season-opening football game Saturday at Boston College.
Beckford, a sophomore, was serving a one-game suspension for violating the university’s student-athlete code of conduct.
Senior Cabrinni Goncalves, who has played defense only in his first three seasons, will get the start in his place. Darius Benders and Sacoy Malone are also likely to see action.
Beckford was the Black Bears’ leading rusher last season with 471 yards and the only running back on the team with signficant game experience.
He is eligible to return for Maine’s second game, Sept. 19 at Tulane.
