CUMBERLAND — With summer drawing to a close, the Cumberland Woodbank is making sure those in need will be able to keep warm.

The organization plans to collect, process and deliver hardwood starting at 8 a.m. each Saturday from Sept. 12-30. The Woodbank seeks donations, as well as volunteers, log splitters, dump trucks, and trailers to complete the work.

The woodbank, a community-based nonprofit organization now in its eighth year, provides firewood to needy area families. Money the bank raises through selling wood to those who can afford it goes toward purchasing fuel for those in need who cannot burn wood.

Thanks to the OceanView retirement community in Falmouth, this year’s wood supply should be plentiful.

OceanView is donating half of the usable hardwoods being cut for its Schoolhouse Cottage development, according to Chris Wasileski of Sea Coast Management, which operates OceanView.

Jim’s Tree Service and Storey Brothers Excavation, both of Cumberland, were scheduled to clear and haul away the wood, valued at roughly $1,400 per load, Wasileski said in an email Sept. 3.

Participants in the next few Saturdays’ events are asked to RSVP. Call Bill Dehais at 653-6789 or Bruce Wildes at 370-8210 to volunteer or coordinate wood collections or donations.
