SCARBOROUGH — Voters will find 11 candidates on the Nov. 3 town ballot, but only five are vying for contested seats.

Five candidates are running for two Town Council seats. Councilor Ed Blaise and Chairwoman Jessica Holbrook are not seeking re-election.

Current School Board member Chris Caiazzo, of Elmwood Avenue, is running for the council, along with James Benedict of Burnham Road, Robert Rowan of Bonnygrove Drive, William Somers of Holmes Road, and Michael Turek of Bayberry Lane.

Holbrook on Wednesday said she is not running again after a two-term stint on the council because she wants to spend more time with her family, which she admitted “is a totally cliche reason.”

Holbrook’s grandfather died earlier this year, and her daughter is a senior at Scarborough High School. She said she wants to be available to her grandmother for more support, and she wants to experience her daughter’s senior year unencumbered by councilor duties.

Holbrook, however, said she intends to run for the council again. “Actually it would be my hope, when things quiet down (and) if the community would have me, I would like to come back at some point,” she said.

Blaise, who will have served a single three-year term, could not be reached for comment.

In the School Board election, Chairwoman Donna Beeley and board member Jacquelyn Perry are seeking re-election. Kathryn Miles of Sandy Point Road is running unopposed for Caiazzo’s seat, and Cari Lyford of Hunter Point Drive is unopposed to complete the final year of a seat left vacant by Jane Leng’s resignation earlier this year.

Nicola Rico of Hawthorn Circle and Ben Viola of Militia Lane are both seeking re-election to the Sanitary District Board of Trustees.

The filing deadline for candidates was Sept. 2.
