The deadline for filing nomination papers for Scarborough’s local election has passed and there are five candidates running for the two open seats on the Town Council.

Those running include former Councilor James Benedict and current school board member Christopher Caiazzo, according to the Town Clerk’s Office.

The other three are Robert Rowan, Liam Somers, who ran unsuccessfully last fall, and Michael Turek, one the founders of the group Scarborough Maine Advocates for Reasonable Taxes and an unsuccessful write-in candidate for the school board during last year’s election.

For a trio of available three-year seats on the Board of Education, incumbents Donna Beeley and Jackie Perry will be joined on the ballot by newcomer Kathryn Miles, who was outspoken during the school budget debate this year.

For the one-year seat available on the school board, which would fill the unexpired term of Jane Leng, there is only one candidate – Cari Lyford.

Following a recent trend, the incumbents on the Town Council, Jessica Holbrook and Ed Blaise, decided not to seek re-election to the town’s governing board.

The election will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 3, and a Candidates Night Forum, sponsored by the Scarborough Community Chamber of Commerce, will be held on Sept. 30, 6-9 p.m. at Town Hall.
