READING, Mass. — The remains of a Massachusetts man who died six decades ago in the Korean War have been returned home.

Army Sgt. Christopher Vars was reported missing Nov. 29, 1950. His remains were found in the early 1990s in a mass grave near a North Korean prison camp, and were recently confirmed as his.

His flag-draped coffin returned Wednesday to Logan International Airport. State police escorted his surviving family members’ motorcade to their hometown of Reading.

WBZ-TV reported flag-waving residents stood on Main Street. Vars’ nephew, Art Vars, said it was “a happy day,” that fulfilled his late father’s wishes. Christopher Vars will be buried in a family plot in Everett after a funeral Oct. 6.
