One of the best photography shows this year has become the Press Herald’s best-kept secret. I’ve seen neither editorial mention nor review of “A Tale of Three Cities: Period and Contemporary Photographs of Paris, New York and Portland” – a show at the University of New England Gallery in Portland, hanging through Oct. 25.

I’m saddened by the lack of attention to this important exhibit, which includes treasures by Berenice Abbott, Todd Webb and Ernst Haas, along with contemporary works by Tillman Crane, Rose Morasco and many other fine Maine photographers.

The UNE gallery is tucked away on the former Westbrook College campus, and so it’s not a place that visitors would stumble upon in their normal walks. But it should be a destination that is pointed to by newspaper coverage and listings.

No criticism is intended here for Bob Keyes, your focused and generous arts reporter, or for insightful reviewer Dan Kany. Perhaps the growth in Portland’s arts community means that the Press Herald needs another art reporter.
