The work that director Wayne Otto put in as he prepared to stage Gilbert and Sullivan’s “HMS Pinafore” is evident. Live music was provided by an eleven member pit orchestra directed by Teresa Henderson containing strings, brass, woodwinds, drums and piano. The Chocolate Church Arts Center’s stage was set with an impressive backdrop created by Morse High School students under the direction of artist John Gable.

What stole the show was Melanie Willey in the role of Josephine, the Captain’s daughter. Willey’s voice easily handled the difficult light Opera ranges that are a hallmark of Gilbert and Sullivan plays. She skillfully brought Josephine to life as she charmed the audience with fluid movement and facial expressions in addition to her captivating singing. Ben Proctor’s voice also delighted the audience in his role as Ralph as he went from abject despair to elation.

Director Otto stated, “Think musical comedy,” as his vision for the HMS Pinafore. His goal was to place less emphasis on the operatic and more on the humor built into the play. He accomplished both. Michael Millet as Captain, Henry Eichman as Sir Joseph, Phil Jermain as Dick Dead Eye, and Henrik Strandskov as Bosun’s Mate all did a good job with facial expressions and body language to convey humor — watch for the moving eye patch and the cat.

The remarkable thing about a community theater group is that it encompasses the community. Otto had the flexibility to cast a number of local children in various roles that added to the overall appeal of the production. I found myself laughing anew at a familiar story and humming the tunes as I left the theater. Otto’s hard work and outside the theater thinking has paid off for a show that is sure to please.
