The town of York sent a crew of firefighters to Massachusetts Sunday night to help departments there battle a seven-alarm blaze in an abandoned mill building in Haverhill.

A dispatcher for the town of York said its SMART truck left Maine around 7:45 p.m. The truck provides lighting, food and drinking water, and can also fill air bottles.

According to the Fire Department’s Facebook page, the SMART truck travels all over New England responding to large fires and disasters.

It took the truck about 40 minutes to reach Haverhill.

According to The Boston Globe, the fire broke out in a mill building at 14 Stevens St. around 5 p.m. Fire departments from across Massachusetts and New Hampshire responded. Officials said the fire started in the former Hudson Shoe Machinery building.

The Globe reported that Haverhill’s mayor had been scheduled to meet Tuesday with a developer who was interested in buying the property.
