One woman was taken to a hospital after a car veered off the road and crashed into a house on Woodford Street on Wednesday night.

The crash happened shortly before 6 p.m. A green Ford Escort sedan turned off Beacon Street onto Woodford Street and drove into the porch of a house at 234 Woodford St.

The hood of the car ended up wedged under the raised floor of the porch, which demolished the front passenger section of the car. Firefighters used extrication tools to get the woman out. The woman, who was the only occupant in the car, received cuts in the crash but her injuries were not life-threatening, police said.

City engineers opted to leave the car where it was overnight so they can examine the building’s structural integrity more closely before removing it, police said. The car may be providing some support for the building.

Portland police summoned an evidence technician to examine the car. Police said it was unclear what caused the woman to drive off the road, but they have ordered blood tests.

A police supervisor said he did not have the woman’s name.
