The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will be conducting an autopsy on a 51-year-old Massachusetts man who died while surfing in Kennebunk on Wednesday afternoon.
Police and rescue workers were called to Gooch’s Beach near Narragansett Point at 3:42 p.m. for a report of an unconscious surfer, said Police Chief Robert MacKenzie. When rescue workers arrived, bystanders were performing CPR, he said.
The man was taken to the hospital but pronounced dead a short while later, he said.
MacKenzie said he is not releasing the man’s name yet because he wants to be sure his family has been notified.
MacKenzie said there were other surfers in the area but none reported seeing what happened to the man.
“There was a surf down there, but not extreme,” he said.
