The driver in a fatal August car crash in Casco who was reported missing has informed police that he is OK.

Michael Minson, 28, of Casco had been reported missing by his mother, with whom he lives, on Sept. 17. She said he had not been seen since Sept. 9, when he said he was going to visit friends, according to police.

Minson met Friday with detectives from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office to discuss his disappearance. He told them that he had been visiting friends in York County.

Minson was driving Crystal Petersen’s car on Aug. 11 when he lost control on Route 11 and crashed into a utility pole, the sheriff’s office said. The single-car crash badly injured Petersen, 26, of Gray, and killed her 4-year-old son, Cameron Peterson. Petersen is recovering and faces a lengthy rehabilitation, family members say.

Minson’s mother said he had been despondent since the crash, leading her to be concerned for his well-being, the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies have not charged Minson in the crash, even though the Maine Secretary of State’s Office has said Minson did not have a driver’s license. The sheriff’s office is still working on a complex accident reconstruction. Once that is done and the investigation is complete, the information will be presented to the Cumberland County District Attorney to determine what charges may be warranted.
