KENNEBUNK — A 51- year-old Massachusetts man died Wednesday after he was found unconscious off of Gooch’s Beach.

According to Kennebunk Police Lieutenant Eric O’Brien, beachgoers called the police after pulling the man from the water and immediately began performing CPR on him. School Resource Officer Mark Carney was the first member of public safety on the scene.

The man, whose name is not being released to ensure his family is notified first, was surfing alone near Narragansett point for an undetermined amount of time and was not wearing a wetsuit, according to police. He was transported to Southern Maine Health Care, where he was pronounced dead.

More details will be released after an autopsy has been performed.
