Police on Monday identified the surfer who died off Gooch’s Beach in Kennebunk last week as Andrew F. Payson, 51, a father of two from Hopkinton, Massachusetts.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner said an autopsy has been completed but that confirming a cause of death requires more tests.

Police and rescue workers were called to Gooch’s Beach near Narragansett Point at 3:42 p.m. Wednesday for a report of an unconscious surfer, Police Chief Robert MacKenzie said last week. When rescue workers arrived, bystanders were performing CPR, he said.

Payson was taken to a hospital but pronounced dead a short while later, he said. MacKenzie said there were other surfers in the area but none reported seeing what happened to Payson.

Payson’s obituary ran in the MetroWest Daily News on Sunday. It described Kennebunk as his favorite place.

“Over the last three years, Drew spent countless happy weekends in his favorite Maine escape with his family: Kennebunk,” his obituary said.

“From hiking, to biking, to kayaking, to surfing, to running, to skiing, Drew never let a beautiful day pass him by.”

Payson, who worked for a consulting company in Norwood, Massachusetts, is survived by his wife, his son, his daughter and his son-in-law, according to his obituary.
