Maine’s medical research and device manufacturing industries will receive nearly $3.4 million in grants from the federal government to support new facilities.
Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker announced in a statement Tuesday that the department’s Economic Development Administration is awarding grants to two Maine operations.
The Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor is expected to receive $1.82 million to help build a state-of-the-art biomedical facility. According to the lab, the facility will play a critical role in the advancement of biomedical research in Maine and abroad.
The city of Presque Isle is expected to receive $1.55 million to outfit an industrial building owned by the city to accommodate the expansion of an orthodontic and medical device manufacturer.
The grant will help fund the construction of offices, clean rooms, general and specialty production rooms, access modifications and exterior site and parking improvements. According to the city of Presque Isle, the project will enable the manufacturer to combine all of its Presque Isle operations into a single facility, creating nearly 400 jobs and generating close to $120 million in private investment.
