As a Northeast liberal it stings to take issue with our president and support Vladimir Putin’s position on Syria. We have, in the past, supported doctrines we oppose in order to defeat the greater danger. Witness our alliance with Russia against Nazism.
Our announced major danger and enemy is the Islamic State. As such, and only in that light, is the enemy of our enemy (Assad), our ally. One thing at a time.
Make alliances with everyone willing and include ground troops, in order to defeat the ISIS, radical Muslim disease. (This from someone opposed to our recent wars.)
Deal with Assad immediately thereafter.
