Charles was born in Shapleigh on Jan. 16, 1933, to Carl and Carlotta (Dunn) Huntress.
He grew up in Shapleigh where he attended local schools.
He married Joan (Martel) Huntress on Oct. 10, 1959. Together they raised three sons and shared 55 years of marriage.
One of his many accomplishments in life was returning to Sanford High School and receiving his full diploma in 1993 at the age of 60. During his working years, Charles was a tool and cutter grinder/machinist, and retired from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.
Dad lived his life serving others. He was a devoted husband and father, giving everything that he had within him for his family. Throughout the years he also served at various times as a Shapleigh town selectman, volunteer policeman, as a volunteer with the fire department, volunteer EMT, town constable and with the Boy Scouts and 4-H Clubs. His greatest joy was serving at the Shapleigh First Baptist Church. Over the years he served as deacon, trustee, Sunday school teacher, youth group director and in numerous other church responsibilities. We all remember dad as the “go to” person in church for everything from building repairs to visitation and discipleship. One of his many projects are the beautiful round stained glass windows in the steeple of the Shapleigh Baptist Church which he personally designed and crafted. Even two weeks before he entered into the presence of his savior, Jesus Christ, he accompanied the pastor on visitation and shared the Gospel with those he visited. Having Jesus Christ as his savior and desiring the same for his family and friends, was his greatest joy in life.
Charles is preceded in death by his wife Joan M. Huntress, of Shapleigh
He is survived by: his three sons, Richard Huntress and his wife Wendy of Waterboro, Bruce Huntress and his wife Nancy of Yelm, Washington, and Steven Huntress and his wife Denise of Limerick; eight grandchildren, Kara Huntress, Ariel Huntress, Jenny Cochrane, Steve Cross, Nathan Huntress, Charlie Huntress, Gabrielle Huntress and Alex Huntress; a brother, Fred Huntress of Shapleigh; and many nieces, nephews.
Visitation will be held from 4-5 p.m. with a funeral service following at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2015 at the First Baptist Church of Shapleigh located at 600 Shapleigh Corner Road in Shapleigh.
