DURHAM, N.H. — The University of New Hampshire has given its most prestigious awards to two men for their support and service to the university.
Foster’s Daily Democrat reports John “Jack” Smith, of Scarborough, Maine, was presented with the university foundation’s Hubbard Family Award for Service to Philanthropy, which recognizes those who’ve strengthened the university through philanthropic leadership or have promoted philanthropy throughout the state. Smith established the John H. Smith ’50 Scholarship in 1999 – the first of six scholarships he now funds.
Sociology professor David Finkelhor was awarded the Charles Holmes Pettee Medal, honoring his devotion to service. Finkelhor, also of Scarborough, is the founder and director of the Crimes against Children Research Center at UNH, known for its research on child maltreatment, bullying, abduction, dating abuse and sex assault.
