AUBURN— A Lewiston man charged with manslaughter told police his baby drowned in 5 inches of water in the bathtub, contrary to witness statements that the tub had overflowed.
Sean St. Amand told police the toilet, not the tub, flooded. He said he’d gone to get a towel to dry off his 11-month-old son and 2-year-old daughter and returned to find the boy unresponsive.
The Sun Journal reported that detectives testified Tuesday that the apartment reeked of marijuana and that drug paraphernalia was in plain sight. A man questioned by police said he’d been smoking marijuana with St. Amand but that St. Amand had been checking on the youngsters.
The testimony came during a hearing on St. Amand’s motion to suppress some statements. He has pleaded not guilty to manslaughter.
