Former Portland Pirates captain Kent Hulst has been named girls’ hockey coach at Cheverus High, the school announced Thursday.

Hulst, 47, replaces Amy McNally, who resigned after last season.

Hulst played for the Pirates from 1993 to 2001. He immediately moved into coaching after his retirement, heading the boys’ hockey program at North Yarmouth Academy for nine years.

In 2010, Hulst became a coach with the Portland Junior Pirates.

Hulst’s daughter, Alyssa, was a standout player for Scarborough High before transferring last year to Berwick Academy.

The Stags, coming off a 5-13 season, will have additional players this season from Kennebunk and Old Orchard Beach high schools.
