Shaun Lawton has been suspended indefinitely from the University of Maine men’s basketball team because of a failure to meet team standards, the school announced Friday.

Lawton, one of two seniors on the squad, averaged 9.6 points and a team-high 1.9 steals last season.

“We have very high standards for our program and they are communicated very clearly to everyone on our team,” Coach Bob Walsh said in a statement. “Unfortunately, Shaun has not lived up to those standards. My hope is that Shaun will learn and grow from this experience.”

The Black Bears open exhibition play Oct. 31 at Southern Maine. Their regular-season opener is Nov. 13 at Connecticut.
