WESTBROOK – A man who runs two substance abuse treatment facilities in New Hampshire says Mercy Hospital declined his offer to buy its Westbrook facility.

Eric Spofford, who runs The Granite House in Derry and New Freedom Academy in Canterbury, says he offered to lease the Westbrook facility for two years and then buy it for several million dollars.

The facility closed in August and moved its services to Portland. About 250 patients were affected by the closure and 45 people lost their jobs.

Spofford says the proposal would’ve kept the treatment facility running. He says the hospital declined the deal because it would rather use the space for offices.

Mercy Hospital said in a statement that it stands by its mission of providing excellent and compassionate care for everyone.
