YORK – The York board of selectmen unanimously voted to oppose the Maine Turnpike Authority’s attempts to move the town’s toll plaza 1.5 miles north.
The Portsmouth Herald reported Monday’s vote in York that was taken after members of a citizens’ group, Think Again, presented claims that moving the toll would lead to a decline in real estate values, create more pollution and damage the environment of the new site.
The MTA board will vote in November on whether to accept the proposed site at mile 8.8 as the “preferred alternative.”
Selectmen agreed to pursue the completion of a report by a town consultant tasked to review studies conducted by the MTA.
Think Again members have set aside $13,000 to hire an attorney to represent York during the permit review process.
