Yvonne Paule (VanBaerlem) Bemis died at Gosnell Memorial Hospice Oct. 8.
Bemis was born July 27, 1935, in Brussels, Belgium to Adrien and Jeanne (Julien) VanBaerlem. She attended schools in Brussels and worked in Antwerp before marrying Charles E. Bemis of Massachusetts. The couple then moved to Portland, where they raised five children.
Bemis worked as a CNA in area nursing homes before switching careers and working at Commercial Union Insurance Company until she retired.
She enjoyed traveling, shopping at flea markets and yard sales, the beach, reading and spending time in her yard.
She was predeceased by her husband Charles, a brother, Jean Marie VanBaerlem, and a sister, Monique VanBaerlem of Brussels.
Bemis is survived by a daughter, Evelyn Gordon; four sons, John, Richard, Charles and Patrick Bemis, all of Portland; two brothers, Gerard and Rene VanBaerlem; four grandchildren, Stephen, Patrick, Christopher and Emily of Portland and several cousins.
No visiting hours are planned; the family will hold a private burial at a date to be determined.
