Chimani, a Portland-based company that develops free mobile apps for national parks, reports that it has raised $745,000 from the Maine Venture Fund, Maine Technology Institute, Maine Angels and individuals including Steve King, a high-tech heavyweight and early Facebook employee.
King and Preston Junger of Yelp!, who previously were advisers to the company, have recently joined Chimani’s board of directors.
Chimani’s co-founder, Kerry Gallivan, came up with the idea of digital park guides while camping in Acadia National Park in 2009. Poor connectivity made his smartphone virtually useless and he was unable to use it to find information about the park’s trails.
Chimani’s apps are designed to function in areas with no phone or data connectivity.
