KITTERY— The Coast Guard cutter Campbell is returning home to Maine.
The cutter was scheduled return to its homeport in Kittery Thursday afternoon from a 50-day patrol of the North Atlantic that included search and rescue, fishing enforcement, exercises with the Canadian Navy – and freeing a turtle entangled in fishing gear.
The Coast Guard says the vessel conducted 52 vessel boardings and issued 17 citations for marine-related violations. On Oct. 26, the cutter’s crew honored a former shipmate by conducting a burial at sea for a retired Coast Guard chief quartermaster.
During the patrol, which spanned an off-shore area from Maine to New York, the Campbell was also involved in multiple rescues, including towing two disabled fishing vessels over 150 nautical miles offshore.
The Campbell traveled to Canadian waters for the joint training exercise with the Canadian Navy and Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
“It was one of the more diverse patrols I have experienced,” Petty Officer 1st Class Matthew Travis said in a news release. “ We carried out a wide array of Coast Guard missions that other cutters never get to see in multiple patrols.”
