BOSTON — Maine Gov. Paul LePage says New England’s highest-in-the-nation energy costs are crippling the region’s ability to attract business and remain economically competitive.

LePage told a conference of the New England-Canada Business Council in Boston on Friday that it was time to stop talking and instead step up efforts to bring hydropower across the border from Quebec.

The Republican governor also called for construction of natural gas pipelines and said he and other governors were open to other energy sources including solar and wind, as long as it helped lower overall energy costs.

Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard (COO’-yard) was also scheduled to address the conference.

Hydro Quebec was among the event’s sponsors, as was Kinder Morgan, a Houston company seeking to bring a natural gas pipeline into New England.
