BANGOR – A Milford man has pleaded guilty to federal charges that he conspired to distribute bath salts while illegally possessing a firearm.

Court records say 59-year-old Edwin Hamel conspired with others to distribute bath salts in Penobscot County from 2012 to 2014. Records say he obtained the drugs from China over the Internet. Hamel pleaded guilty on Monday.

Prosecutors say Hamel also owned two rifles that he acquired in exchange for bath salts. Laws prohibit him from possessing firearms because of a prior marijuana trafficking conviction.

Hamel faces up to 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine.
