A Farmington woman was killed Tuesday evening in Farmington after her minivan collided with a tanker truck near the intersection of Route 2 and Route 27.

Farmington Police Chief Jack Peck told WCSH-TV that the woman, 59, was driving east in a 2003 Ford Windstar minivan when she crossed the centerline and hit a Dead River Co. truck head-on. Her name was not immediately released.

Peck said the fuel truck was carrying 800 gallons of fuel, some of which spilled onto the roadway. WCSH-TV said the Maine Department of Environmental Proteciton and the town’s public works department spent much of the night cleaning up the spill.

A dispatcher for the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office said the tanker truck rolled over, blocking the road and forcing Farmington police to close Route 2 for nearly five hours. The accident, which took place near the Sandy River Farms corn maze, was reported to authorities around 5:30 p.m.
