A Wiscasset man was killed Monday in an all-terrain-vehicle accident in East Moxie Township, in rural Somerset County, and authorities say speed was a likely factor in the crash.

Charles Abbott, 65, died after he crashed his Polaris Sportsman ATV on York Road in the unorganized township, east of The Forks Plantation, according to Cpl. John MacDonald, spokesman for the Maine Warden Service.

Abbott was following a friend on a separate ATV when he veered off the dirt road and struck a tree at about 2:50 p.m. Monday, according to MacDonald.

Abbott was pronounced dead at the scene. West Forks Fire and Rescue as well as Upper Kennebec Valley Ambulance assisted. A LifeFlight helicopter also was called.
