ORONO — The University of Maine men’s hockey team scored three goals in the first period and beat 4-1 Saturday for its second straight victory.

Maine, which snapped an eight-game losing streak Friday, improved to 2-8-3 overall, 2-4 in Hockey East. Vermont fell to 3-8-2, 2-4-2.

Vermont jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Brady Shaw, but got two short-handed goals 12 seconds midway through the first period. Cam Brown scored from Blaine Bryon and Dan Renouf at 9:01, and Steven Swavely scored from Will Merchant.

Nolan Vesey’s power-play goal later in the first, assisted by Will Merchant and Brian Morgan, gave the Black Bears a 3-1 lead.

Brady Campbell added an empty-net goal. Matt Morris stopped 35 saves for Maine, while Mike Santaguida had 16 saves for Vermont.

UMASS-BOSTON 3, SOUTHERN MAINE 2: Matt Lemire scored the winner 6:50 into the third period as the Beacons (6-0, 4-0 NEHC) beat the Huskies (3-4, 2-3) in Gorham.

Alex Pantalone gave USM a 1-0 lead 3:20 into the game, but Drew Gannon tied it eight seconds later. After Derek Colucci put the Beacons ahead midway through the second, USM tied it when Patrick Magliano scored from Zach Dymock.

Zach Andrews had 18 saves for the Beacons. Kyle Shapiro made 21 saves for Southern Maine.

WILLIAMS 4, BOWDOIN 1: Noah Klag turned aside 30 shots and the Ephs got goals from four players in a season-opening victory over the Polar Bears at Williamstown, Massachusetts.

Peter Cronin made 34 saves and Cody Todesco scored for Bowdoin.

MIDDLEBURY 4, COLBY 0: Stephen Klein made 28 saves and four Panthers scored against the Mules in a season opener at Middlebury, Vermont.

Emerson Verrier stopped 35 shots for Colby.

BABSON 5, UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 1: Five players scored as the Beavers (6-0, 4-0 NEHC) beat the Nor’easters (1-4-1, 1-4 NEHC) in Biddeford.

Trevor Fleurent scored for UNE.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

WAGNER 87, MAINE 73: Corey Henson scored 24 points, Dwaun Anderson added 15 and the Seahawks (1-2) pulled away late against the Black Bears (0-3) in Staten Island, New York.

Henson was 5 of 12 from the field and made all 11 free-throw attempts, adding seven assists and three rebounds. Anderson had seven rebounds.

Freshman Issac Vann had 28 points on 8-of-12 shooting for Maine.

KEENE STATE 89, UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 66: Nate Stitchell scored 12 of his 17 points in the first half to help the Owls (4-0) beat the Nor’easters (3-2) in Biddeford.

Devin Thompson paced UNE with 17 points. Jean-Luc Parker and Ben Judson added 12 apiece.

SOUTHERN MAINE 101, PINE MANOR 75: Jose Novchanthavong and Zach Leal combined for 51 points to lead the Huskies (3-1) against the Gators (3-1) in the championship game of the Rivier Tip-Off Tournament in Nashua, New Hampshire.

Novchanthavong scored 26 points and Leal had 25. Atencio Martin added 16 points and Fred Knight scored 11.

COLBY 102, CURRY 88: Chris Hudnut scored 38 points to lift the Mules (1-1) over the Colonels (0-4) in the consolation game of the WPI tournament in Worcester, Massachusetts.

Ryan Jann added 22 points for Colby. Luke Westman had 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Patrick Stewart also scored 11 points. Trey Jones led the Colonels with 21 points.

BOWDOIN 86, DANIEL WEBSTER 74: Lucas Hausman scored 26 points and Jack Simonds added 21 to lead the Polar Bears (1-1) in the consolation game of the Roger Williams Tip-Off Tournament in Bristol, Rhode Island.

The game was close until Bowdoin stretched a 65-63 lead to 73-65 with 3:30 to play on an 8-2 run, sparked by Matt Palecki’s 3-pointer.

Palecki finished with 14 points and Liam Farley had 10 for Bowdoin. Ray Farmer and Jared Harrington each scored 19 points for the Eagles (1-2).

PENN STATE-MONT ALTO 88, SOUTHERN MAINE C.C. 61: Jerome Evans scored 25 points and added seven rebounds as the Lions (3-1) cruised past the Seawolves (3-4) at South Portland.

Dylan Silvestri had 15 points and 11 rebounds for SMCC.

NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS: Purdue senior Matt McClintock, a Madison High graduate, finished 133rd with a time of 31:15 on the 10K course in Louisville, Kentucky.
