NEW ORLEANS — New Orleans police have identified a man accused of shooting a medical student who stopped an apparent kidnapping.

Police say 21-year-old Euric Cain of New Orleans is wanted on charges of armed robbery, second-degree kidnapping and attempted first-degree murder.

Tulane University and Crimestoppers are offering up to $12,500 for information leading to arrest and indictment.

Surveillance video released by police shows a man dragging a woman toward an SUV early Friday, and 25-year-old Peter Gold pulling up and trying to help her. Before Gold could call police, the man approached and pointed a semi-automatic pistol at him, the New Orleans Advocate reported.

“The victim explained to the suspect, repeatedly, that he did not have any cash,” New Orleans police said in a news release. “The suspect became enraged and shot the victim once in the stomach and attempted to shoot him a second time, but the gun jammed.”

Eventually, the gunman gave up, went back to his car and drove away, leaving his victim bleeding on the sidewalk.

The woman was treated for minor injuries and released.

Gold survived the shooting and remains in “guarded condition” at University Medical Center, where he is expected to recover fully, according to the Advocate.
