Demolition work continued Tuesday at St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church on outer Congress Street.
The church was sold to the Jewish Community Alliance of Southern Maine, which plans to build a new headquarters at the site next to the Westgate Shopping Center.
The church fell victim to declining membership and a parish deficit, so it was combined with St. Pius X and St. Joseph’s churches to become Our Lady of Hope. The last Mass was celebrated at St. Patrick in 2013.
A spokesman for the Jewish Community Alliance said the organization plans to offer the new building as a community meeting space. It also operates both preschool and after-school programs, a food pantry and other charitable services.
