GORHAM — Jose Novchanthavong and Atencio Martin scored 21 points each Tuesday night to lead the University of Southern Maine to a 106-92 victory against Bates in a nonconference men’s basketball game at Hill Gymnasium.

Cole Libby added 17 points, Aaron Tolman scored 13, and Zach Leal and Fred Knight had 11 each for USM (3-1) against the Bobcats (2-1).

Libby and Novchanthavong made 3-pointers to help the Huskies open with a 12-2 run. Josh Britten and Max Eaton countered with 3-pointers as Bates pulled within 16-12 with 14:17 left in the first half. USM then went on an 8-0 run and led 51-32 at halftime.

Mike Boornazian led Bates with 26 points. Shawn Strickland added 20, and Malcolm Delpeche chipped in with 11 rebounds and eight points.

COLBY 77, THOMAS 61: The Mules (2-1) opened the second half with a 14-4 run and defeated the visiting Terriers (2-3) at Waterville.

Tyheem Simon scored 16 of his game-high 18 points as Thomas stayed within 35-32 at halftime.

Ryan Jann scored a game-high 17 points for Colby, Patrick Stewart had 12, including 4 of 8 from behind the arc, and grabbed a game-high nine boards. Sam Wilson added 11 points and seven rebounds.

Levi Barnes added 13 points for Thomas.

UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 72, BOWDOIN 70: Devin Thompson scored 22 points and reserve Gavin Dibble added 16, and UNE (3-2) survived a last-second 3-point attempt to defeat Bowdoin (1-1) at Brunswick.

Paced by 15 points from Lucas Hausman, Bowdoin took a 36-35 halftime lead. UNE opened the second half with a 7-4 run to take a 42-40 lead.

The second half saw five lead changes with the Nor’easters opening their largest lead of five points with 2:15 left on a Matt Lettick layup.

The Polar Bears cut the deficit to two on a free throw from Neil Fuller and a pair from Hausman.

Bowdoin then had a chance to win on a 3-pointer off an offensive rebound at the buzzer but missed.

UMAINE-AUGUSTA 96, SOUTHERN MAINE CC 83: Dallas Murray hit a 3-pointer with 13:53 remaining to give the Moose (3-5, 2-2 Yankee Small College) a 57-54 lead against the Seawolves (3-6, 1-2) at Augusta.

SMCC led 45-44 at halftime.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

SOUTHERN MAINE 65, BATES 56: Ella Ramonas scored 16 points to pace USM (1-2) over Bates (0-2) at Gorham.

Megan Pelletier added 11 points for the Huskies, all in the second half.

UMAINE-AUGUSTA 74, SOUTHERN MAINE CC 50: The Moose (8-3, 4-0 Yankee Small College) outscored the Seawolves (7-2, 2-1) 30-11 in the second quarter at Augusta.

Alicia Hoyt led SMCC with 14 points, and reserve Destinie Montano added 11 points and four rebounds.

MEN’S HOCKEY

SOUTHERN MAINE 1, SALEM STATE 0: Todd Bannerman scored from Parker Sanderson at 9:45 of the third period as the Huskies (4-4) defeated the Vikings (3-3) at Gorham.

Kyle Shapiro stopped all 24 shots he faced for USM. Jason Pucciarelli had 25 saves for Salem State.

UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 8, BOWDOIN 3: Trevor Fleurent scored a hat trick for UNE (2-4-1) against Bowdoin (0-2-1) at Biddeford.

Fleurent scored at 59 seconds of the third period, again at 3:31 and then 14:18.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 3, SALEM STATE 0: Three players scored for the Nor’easters (2-4-1) against the Vikings (3-5) at Salem, Massachusetts.

Emily Corrales made it 1-0 at 13 minutes of the first period from Abby Kinens and Mary Wirth. Shannon Smith scored on a power play 1:16 into the third and Marissa Clifford-Biederman added a late goal from Haley Gorman and Wirth.

COLBY 2, SOUTHERN MAINE 1: Bella Papapetros had a goal and an assist as the Mules (2-1) scored twice in the second period to beat the Huskies (1-5-1) at Waterville.

Sasha Fritts also scored for Colby. Cassandra Sherman gave USM the lead with six seconds remaining in the first period.
