Portland Players will present “Shrek the Musical,” beginning Friday at its community theater, 420 Cottage Road in South Portland.

The production, which runs through Dec. 20, tells the story of Shrek, a kind-hearted green ogre, who is feared by many and retreats to a swamp to live in happy isolation.

Enter a gang of homeless fairytale characters, including Pinocchio, Humpty Dumpty and The Three Little Pigs, who raid his sanctuary after being chased from their homes by Lord Farquaad. Shrek agrees to help, but part of the deal is to rescue Princess Fiona, who has a secret of her own.

The production welcomes 15 new faces to the Players’ stage and 13 returning favorites. The musical is directed by Michael Donovan, with music direction by Evan Cuddy and choreography by Raymond Marc Dumont.

Show times are at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2:30 p.m. Sundays.

Ticket cost $20 for adults, $18 for seniors and $15 for children and students with ID. Tickets are available on online, or by calling 799-7337.
