A Florida man who owes nearly $120,000 in back child support in Maine was sentenced Monday in U.S. District Court in Portland to serve five years of probation.

Glen S. Caristinos, 49, of Safety Harbor, Florida, was ordered by Judge Nancy Torresen as a condition of his probation to pay $117,600 in restitution.

Caristinos had been ordered in 2001 by the Maine Department of Health and Human Services to pay his ex-wife $248 per week in child support. That order was increased to $303 in 2003, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Caristinos made inconsistent payments from the initial order in 2001 until 2005, when he moved to Florida and “virtually ceased making payments,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office said in a news release announcing the sentence.

Caristinos pleaded guilty on July 3 to a charge of failure to pay child support.
