Two teenagers died in a car crash late Saturday night on Wotton’s Mill Road in Union following a police chase.

A third teenager is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries from the crash, authorities said Sunday.

The two teenagers in the front seats were pronounced dead at the scene. The Knox County Sheriff’s Office identified them as Caleb Byras, 17, of Litchfield, who was driving, and Kara Brewer, 16, of Rockland. It did not give the name of the injured teen – a 17-year-old Warren girl.

The sheriff’s office said Rockport police Officer Craig Cooley had tried to stop the vehicle carrying the teens on Route 17 in Rockport for speeding just before midnight but the car failed to stop and continued to travel west on Route 17.

Cooley followed the vehicle until Wotton’s Mill Road but lost sight of it. Cooley then continued onto Wotton’s Mill Road and found the car several miles down the road. The car had gone off the road and crashed into a tree, splitting the vehicle in two.

Cooley had stopped Byras an hour before and summoned him for speeding, according to the sheriff’s office.

Police said speed was a factor in the crash.

The Maine State Police are helping to investigate.
