WALTHAM, Mass. —The remains of a Korean War veteran have returned to his Massachusetts hometown 65 years after he was declared missing in action.
The Boston Globe reported 22-year-old Army Sgt. Robert Dakin went missing on Dec. 12, 1950, after a battle near the Chosin Reservoir in North Korea.
The status of the Waltham native was changed to deceased after no information could be found regarding his loss.
Dakin’s remains made it back to Waltham on Thursday afternoon after being escorted from Logan International Airport in Boston by state and local police.
The remains were among at least 600 returned to the United States by the North Korean government between 1990 and 1994.
Department of Defense officials say Dakin was identified through circumstantial evidence and two forms of DNA analysis.
