Marilyn and Marina Urbano are often the friendly faces of the Press Herald Toy Fund.

The mother-daughter dynamic duo spends time sorting, packaging and distributing toys at the Freeport warehouse. But their volunteer duties also take them into the community for a variety of fundraising efforts that are used to supplement reader donations.

You might see them at the Portland Pirates or Red Claws games selling 50-50 raffle tickets for the toy fund, or at other public events accepting donations to buy toys for needy children.

This year, Marilyn, who lives in Westbrook, and Marina, who lives in Portland, took their talents to area businesses and lined up donated items for a month-long fundraising raffle. A different winner is drawn every day and the prizes include gift certificates to area shops, restaurants, theaters and gyms. Tickets are available on the fund’s website.

The fundraising is fun for Marilyn, especially because she gets to do it with her daughter, shesaid. But she says there’s nothing better than handing out the toys to grateful parents.

“Friday I’ll be doing that, which is my favorite,” Marilyn said.

The fund – now in its 66th year – is accepting applications for toys from needy families in Cumberland, York, Sagadahoc, Lincoln and Knox counties. Applications can be downloaded at pressheraldtoyfund.org or picked up at the Welcome Center desk on the fifth floor of One City Center in Portland. Call 791-6672 to have one mailed to you.

The deadline for applications has been extended to December 15.

Donations to help buy the toys can be made on the website or by writing checks to the Portland Press Herald Toy Fund and mailing them to the fund at P.O. Box 7310, Portland, ME 04112.

The campaign’s fundraising goal this year is $250,000. The total raised so far is $37,951.
