Wiscasset’s police chief arrested a man who allegedly assaulted him during an investigation into a minor traffic accident Monday afternoon.

According to a story posted on the Wiscasset Police Department’s Facebook page, Police Chief Troy Cline arrested Matthew S. Pelletier, 30, of Pittston.

Cline said he found Pelletier and a woman – later identified as Pelletier’s wife – in a vehicle that had gone off the road and into a ditch near the intersection of Foye and Gardiner roads.

Firefighters determined that the two occupants were unharmed, but when Cline asked Pelletier for identification, he refused. Cline placed handcuffs on Pelletier, who then became combative and tried to head-butt the police chief, police said.

Cline and another officer were able to get Pelletier into a police cruiser, but Pelletier kicked out the cruiser’s rear passenger window, the Facebook post said.

Pelletier was transported to the Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset, where was charged with reckless conduct, refusal to submit to arrest, assault, and aggravated criminal mischief.
