A Brunswick couple were arrested Friday in their downtown apartment and charged with trafficking in heroin.

Police said Justin Coffin and Tara Dry-Crooker, both 35, were arrested at their apartment at 23 Oak St.

Maine Drug Enforcement Agency officers searched the apartment Friday and found 800 bags of heroin and $5,000 in cash, according to Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

The heroin was worth $16,000 on the street, he said.

Agents had been investigating the couple, who frequently traveled outside Maine to buy and sell heroin in Lincoln and Sagadahoc counties, McCausland said.

The two were taken to Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset, where bail was set at $2,000 for Coffin and $500 for Dry-Crooker.

The two are scheduled to appear in West Bath District Court on Jan. 12. Bath and Brunswick police and deputies from Lincoln and Sagadahoc sheriffs’ offices helped in the arrests.
