Reading the front page of the paper Dec. 12 was a truly surreal experience.

Above the fold was the headline “Small nations swaying fight for a tougher climate goal” (which included the points that rising seas are slated to swallow entire island nations, and that the nations of the world are failing to make progress on meeting any goal).

Next to this article was a color photo and an even bigger headline: “With gas prices down, a nice time to fill up.”

This juxtaposition of the two articles was stunning. The Paris talks were failing, and scientists tell us that life as we know it is threatened – but hey, look! Gas is cheap!

That the editors (and possibly readers, too) saw no moral problems with encouraging people to burn more fossil fuels at such a time made me wonder: What is wrong with us?
