WORCESTER, Mass. — Robert Champion scored 20 points and Matt Husek added 19 points with 13 rebounds and hit two key free throws down the stretch to help Holy Cross hold off Maine 76-75 on Monday night in men’s basketball.

Troy Reid-Knight’s jumper pulled the Black Bears within 70-69, but Champion made three free throws, the last two with 11 seconds left to make it 73-69.

Aaron Calixte made a layup with 6 seconds left to make it a two-point game, but Champion was fouled and made 1 of 2 free throws to make 74-71.

UMaine’s Shaun Lawton’s free throw with 4 seconds left made it a two-point game, then Husek made two free throws and Holy Cross led 76-72.

Calixte hit a 3 at the buzzer.

Karl Charles and Cullen Hamilton scored 13 points apiece for the Crusaders (5-6), who made 17 of 28 free throws (61 percent).

Reid-Knight led Maine (2-9) with 15 points, Kevin Little and Lavar Harewood each scored 12, Calixte added 11 and Till Gloger 10. Devine Eke had 11 rebounds.

SOUTHERN VERMONT 67, BATES 63: Nate Goldsmith scored 17 points to lead the Mountaineers (8-2) past the Bobcats (4-4) in Lewiston.

Goldsmith scored 13 in the second half, including a layup with 2:01 left to put Southern Vermont up 63-61. Bates made it a one-point game with 1:45 left on two free throws from Marcus Delpeche, but the Mountaineers responded with a layup from Casey Hall with 1:10 left to put the game away.

Daemond Carter added 12 points and six rebounds for Southern Vermont.

Marcus Delpeche had 21 points and nine rebounds for Bates.

(7) NORTH CAROLINA 94, APPALACHIAN STATE 70: Brice Johnson scored 22 points to help the Tar Heels (10-2) beat the Mountaineers (2-9) in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

North Carolina guard Marcus Paige played only 17 minutes, jamming his right ankle in the first half.

(10) PROVIDENCE 90, MASSACHUSETTS 66: Ben Bentil scored a career-high 32 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to lead the Friars (12-1) to a win in Amherst, Massachusetts.

(19) WEST VIRGINIA 84, EASTERN KENTUCKY 59: Jaysean Paige scored all of his 17 points in the first half and the Mountaineers (10-1) beat the Colonels (8-6) in Morgantown, West Virginia.

Messalonskee graduate Nick Mayo had nine points for Eastern Kentucky.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

PURDUE 56, MAINE 33: Bridget Perry and April Wilson each had 10 points and five assists to lead the Boilermakers (9-2) over the Black Bears (9-5) at Mackey Arena in West Lafayette, Indiana.

Perry also grabbed eight rebounds and had three steals for Purdue, which who led by as many as 28 early in the fourth quarter.

Purdue jumped to a quick lead in the first quarter and led 27-14 at the half before using a 22-8 second-half run to put the game away.

Sigi Koziar led the Black Bears with nine points; Bella Swan and Makaela Gustafson each had eight. Swan also grabbed 10 rebounds.

(1) UCONN 86, LSU 40: Moriah Jefferson scored 17 points and the top-ranked Huskies (9-0), playing without two-time national player of the year Breanna Stewart, routed the Tigers (6-6) in Hartford, Connecticut.

(3) NOTRE DAME 91, SAINT JOSEPH’S 55: Lindsay Allen had 16 points, nine assists and seven rebounds to help the Irish (10-1) beat the Hawks (4-6) in Philadelphia.

(4) BAYLOR 77, JAMES MADISON 63: Nina Davis scored 15 of her 19 points in the second half, Niya Johnson had 15 assists and the Bears (13-0) got a big lift from their reserves in a win over the Dukes (6-4) in Winter Park, Florida.

(8) MISSISSIPPI STATE 72, SMU 70: Victoria Vivians scored 18 points, Ketara Chapel added 13 and the Bulldogs (11-1) held on to beat the Mustangs (5-6) in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

(9) OHIO STATE 93, VIRGINIA 73: Ameryst Alston scored 24 points and Kelsey Mitchell added 23 to lead the Buckeyes (8-3) to a win over the Cavaliers (8-4) in Columbus, Ohio.

(11) OREGON STATE 80, CAL POLY 43: Gabriella Hanson matched her career high with 19 points and the Beavers (9-1) used a smothering defense to overwhelm the Mustangs (6-6) in Corvallis, Oregon.

(17) DEPAUL 88, LOYOLA OF CHICAGO 75: Taylor Johnson scored 24 points and Sam Lambrigtsen added a career-high 21 as the Ramblers (3-7) shocked the Blue Demons (8-5) in Chicago.

(23) ARIZONA STATE 68, (10) FLORIDA STATE 56: Arnecia Hawkins hit all seven of her shots for a career-high 23 points and the Sun Devils (8-3) beat the Seminoles (9-3) in Tempe, Arizona.

(25) MISSOURI 82, TEXAS STATE 56: Sophie Cunningham scored 21 points, Jordan Frericks added 19 points and the Tigers (12-0) shut down the Bobcats (5-5) in the fourth quarter to stay undefeated and pull out a win in Columbia, Missouri.
