The Cape Elizabeth School Board chose Elizabeth Scifres to lead the board for the next year at a caucus held on Monday, Dec. 14.

Scrifres, who served on the board from 2011-2013, was re-elected to a second term in November.

At the time, Scifres said, “I’m running for school board to preserve and protect what is great about our schools, while at the same time updating and innovating so that our children are prepared to be citizens of this ever-changing world.”

If elected, she also vowed to, “push to improve communication and thus transparency, at all levels. I will ask the hard questions that need to be asked.”

This week Scifres told the Current, “I am honored that my fellow board members entrusted me to guide our work. My over-arching goal is (for us to be) a healthy, high-functioning board, staying focused on student achievement.”

She added that, “Every decision we make must be seen through the lens of empowering all students to learn and succeed” and promised to help develop a budget “that is needs-based, supports our strategic plan and is sensitive to our community.”

Other goals include continuing the ongoing audit of the school district’s policy manual and increasing communication, input and participation from the public, as well as school department employees.

Scifres called the Cape Elizabeth schools “superb” and said the school district benefits “from the community’s support of excellence in education as it continually changes and improves.”

And, “despite perennial uncertainties such as state funding, insurance costs and population fluctuations,” she said, “Cape Elizabeth is committed to providing the best possible education for all students.”

A formal vote confirming Scrifres as the school board chairwoman will be held on Jan. 12.
