SCARBOROUGH — Donald S. “Don” Doane, 84, of Scarborough, who toured with some of the world’s greatest jazz musicians and was a world-renowned trombonist in his own right, died at the Maine Veteran’s Home Dec. 16.

He was born in Portland Nov. 6, 1931, a son of Donald R. and Madeline (Spencer) Doane. He graduated from South Portland High School with the Class of 1949, and from Boston University in 1953. He married his high school sweetheart, Barbara A. Concannon, on July 13, 1953, at Holy Cross Church in South Portland.

His musical education began early when he joined his father’s band, The Katahdin Mountaineers. After he graduated from college, Doane was inducted into the Army, where he honed his musical talents in military bands. After he was discharged, Doane worked in Scarborough, Westbrook and at the Tony Boffa School of Music as a music teacher, as well as stints with nationally known jazz bands.

He toured the world with such greats as Maynard Ferguson, Woody Herman, Count Basie and Duke Ellington. His jazz bands were famous locally, and music by the Don Doane Band was provided for many weddings, graduations and concerts. Doane also recorded several of his own albums. After retiring from teaching in 1987, he spent his summer days on the golf course, and the rest of the year doting on his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, traveling, playing jazz trombone and attending his grandchildren’s activities.

Doane was a dedicated father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was well respected in the community as a teacher, musician and sage. Doane survived a severe stroke in 2001, but became a inspiration to many as he rebounded enough to continue teaching and playing his beloved trombone. He continued playing and practicing music until his death.

He was predeceased by his loving wife of 62 years, Barbara C. Doane, and his parents Donald R. and Madeline S. Doane.

Doane is survived by a brother, Alfred Doane; four children, Donald C. Doane, of Portland, Catherine Knudsen, of Falmouth, James Doane, of South Portland and Joseph Doane, of Cape Elizabeth; nine grandchildren, Neils and Kurt Knudsen, and Lianna, Alison, Paige, Owen, Carolyn, Joseph and Peter Doane; two great-grandchildren, Olivia and Elliot Knudsen; and several nieces and nephews.

Doane’s family would like to thank his caregivers at the Maine Veterans’ Home in Scarborough.
