CANAAN — A local teenager was killed early Friday morning in a single-vehicle crash on Hinckley Road, according to the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office.

Lawrence Richardson, 19, of Clinton was killed when he lost control of the pickup truck he was driving and was thrown from the vehicle when it rolled over, Sheriff Dale Lancaster said Friday afternoon. Richardson was the only occupant of the vehicle.

The accident occurred about 4:10 a.m. about a mile from the intersection of Hinckley Road, which is Route 23, and U.S. Route 2, Lancaster said.

Richardson was traveling east on Hinckley Road when he lost control of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado he was driving while on a curve in the road, according to Lancaster. The truck rolled over and Richardson was ejected from the vehicle, Lancaster added.

Richardson was dead when Somerset County sheriff’s deputies arrived at the crash scene, Lancaster said. An ambulance from Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan and members of the Canaan Fire Department also went to the scene.

The accident is under investigation and deputies are trying to determine whether weather conditions, such as black ice, and speed were factors in the crash, Lancaster said.
