On the first day of winter, just as I wished my co-workers a merry Christmas, I looked out a window of our office on Monument Square. A parade of people holding candles marched up Preble Street, led by a bagpiper playing carols.

My friend explained, “It’s the longest night of the year march to bring awareness to homelessness.” If we are the richest nation on Earth, please tell me why any child must go hungry or anyone must sleep in the cold.
