York police on Saturday arrested a New Hampshire man after a high-speed car chase that turned into a brief foot pursuit when the suspect turned down a dead-end street.

Christopher Archanbault, 49, of Farmington, New Hampshire, is being held at the York County Jail on $6,000 bail. He is charged with felony counts of eluding police, receiving stolen property and reckless conduct.

Police said Archanbault was driving a Ford Focus with Maine plates on Cider Hill Road when his license plate was flagged by police as a stolen car. A license plate reader device installed in a York cruiser scans the plates of vehicles as they drive by, and the cruiser was alerted that Archanbault’s car was stolen from Rochester, New Hampshire, on Dec. 19.

When officers tried to stop Archanbault Saturday night, he sped off and led them on a car chase at speeds topping 85 mph, turning from Cider Hill Road to travel south on Route 1, weaving through traffic on the York River Bridge, police said. Archanbault then turned onto Beech Ridge Road before turning onto Claude MacIntire Road, a dead-end street.

Archanbault fled on foot, but was quickly apprehended by three York police officers.
